Ankle Binders & Braces

A twisted or sprained ankle is one of the most common injuries. The right support controls swelling and protects the joint while the ligaments settle. Here's how elastic binders, neoprene supports, lace-up and air braces differ — and how to size, wear and wash them.

When an Ankle Support Helps

How to Choose the Right Size

Sized by ankle circumference and, for braces, shoe size. Match the brand chart, not your clothing size.

We measure and fit you in-store.

How to Wear It Correctly

  1. For a fresh sprain, pair the support with rest, ice and elevation (R.I.C.E).
  2. Apply over a thin sock; centre it around the ankle joint.
  3. For lace-up/figure-8 wraps, anchor under the heel and cross over the ankle evenly.
  4. Wear inside a closed shoe for walking; remove at rest unless advised.
  5. Loosen if you feel numbness, tingling or cold toes.

Washing & Maintenance

  • Hand-wash in cold/lukewarm water with mild soap
  • Close velcro before washing so it doesn't snag
  • Press out water gently; air-dry flat in shade
  • Wash regularly to keep compression & hygiene
  • No hot water, bleach or machine dryer
  • No direct sun or radiator drying
  • Don't wring, iron or store damp
  • Replace once elastic/velcro stops holding

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you can't put weight on the ankle, there's severe pain or deformity, numbness, or swelling and pain that aren't improving in a few days — it may be more than a simple sprain.

Ankle Support FAQs

Best support for a sprained ankle?+

For a fresh sprain with swelling, an elastic binder gives compression and pairs with rest, ice and elevation. For repeated sprains or instability, a lace-up or air brace gives firmer side support.

Ankle binder vs ankle brace?+

A binder is elastic compression with mild support. A brace (lace-up/stirrup) is firmer and controls side-to-side movement for instability or sport. Binders = comfort; braces = stability.

How do I size it?+

By ankle circumference (and shoe size for braces). Match the brand chart, snug-not-tight, and make sure it fits inside your shoe. We fit in-store.

How do I wash it?+

Hand-wash cold/lukewarm with mild soap, close the velcro first, air-dry in shade. No hot water, bleach, dryers or sun.
